Clinker Planked Boat

Carvel built or carvel planking is a method of boat building where hull planks are fastened edge to edge, gaining support from the frame and forming a smooth surface.. in contrast with clinker built hulls, where planked edges overlap, carvel construction gives a stronger hull, capable of taking a variety of full-rigged sail plans, albeit one of greater weight.. A clinker plank is overlaid the plank below for a lap (clinker is also known as lapstrake construction, as strake is another name for a plank and lap describing the joint between each plank).. Clinker is generally quicker than carvel as the planks are not shaped in their thickness, only in their width. clinker is a great way to build small traditional boats. both carvel and clinker are done over bent frames in small boats, in larger sizes carvel may be over sawn or laminated frames..

The light weight of the boats making the portages necessary at the heads of the rivers practicable. the method lived on well after the viking era and clenched planking has been found on larger vessels used for trading in northern waters. the bremen cog is an intermediate type with clinker side planking and a caravel bottom.. Clinker (lapstrake) planked timber. small clinker boat. clinker boats can be built without transverse frame moulds, cutting each pair of planks from its template. this is normally worthwhile only for series production, and is unlikely to be of use to the home builder.. Lining off planks is the process of setting up the plank widths throughout the hull, and it is applicable for carvel and clinker planked boats alike. with the characteristic ridges formed by the overlaid planks on a clinker vessel, the ‘look’ or run of the planks is critical for a nice looking vessel especially above the waterline..
